What is Radon? – A cancer causing, radioactive gas
What is Radon? Quick Facts
- Radon is a cancer causing, radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe.
- You can’t see, smell or taste Radon.
- Radon is estimated to cause thousands of deaths each year, because when you breathe air containing Radon, you can get lung cancer.
- The Surgeon General warned that Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. (See more about the health risks of Radon Here)
- Radon can be found all over the U.S.
- Radon can get into any type of building — homes, offices, and schools.
How does Radon enter a home?
What is the solution?
1. Get your home Tested
Radon is difficult to detect because you can’t see it or smell it. Radon is especially common in basements, where the gas becomes trapped and collects into dangerously high levels. The only way to know if your home is at risk is to have it tested specifically for Radon.
Radon testing your home is an affordable and simple process. You can call our offices or request a quote online to get started.
2. Install a Radon Mitigation System
If your Radon levels are 4.0 pCi/L or above, you need to have a Radon mitigation system installed. A Radon mitigation system reduces the Radon gas in your home and releases it back outside away from the home where it is dispersed harmlessly into the air.
A Radon mitigation system can be installed in your home in as little as 3-5 hours. A system from Apex Radon is treated for UV protection and can be painted to the exterior color of your home to last longer and look better.
